Renting a car can be a good option for those who need a vehicle temporarily, for example for a holiday, when a car needs to be repaired or when you have a temporary assignment for work. However, there are several aspects you should pay attention to to avoid unforeseen costs and other surprises afterwards. In this blog we share some things you should pay attention to when renting a car.

Insurance

One of the most important aspects when renting a car is insurance. It is important to understand which insurances are included in the rental price and which insurances you can optionally add. Most rental companies include basic insurance in the rental price, which has a high deductible. Additional insurance can reduce the deductible or eliminate the costs entirely, for example in the event of theft of the car. Shortleaseland includes car insurance and passenger insurance as standard. This means that the car, you, any passengers and belongings are insured.

Permitted number of kilometers

It is important to check how many kilometers are included in your rental contract. Most rental companies only include a limited number of kilometers, and you have to pay extra for the extra kilometers driven. Depending on what you want to use the car for, it is therefore a good idea to calculate the additional costs of the kilometers driven and get an idea of the total costs. At Shortleaseland, you agree at the start of the contract the number of kilometers you can drive per year, which can be converted into the number of kilometers allowed per month.

Roadside assistance

Always check whether roadside assistance is included in your rental agreement. Although we hope we won't need it, breakdowns can always happen and it's nice to know that help is available at no extra cost. Some rental companies do not include roadside assistance, so it is always important to check this in advance. At Shortleaseland, roadside assistance is included as standard in the rental price and replacement transport after 24 hours.

Pick-up and drop-off location

The choice of pick-up and drop-off location can also have a major influence on the rental price. For example, picking up and returning a car at the airport may be more expensive and you may have to return the car to the place where you picked it up. At Shortleaseland we offer a pick-up and delivery service for people who are unable to pick up or return the car on location. For delivery on location a price of €75 excl. VAT is charged and for collection on location a price of €100 excl. VAT is charged.

Additional drivers

Adding additional drivers to your rental contract can be useful, for example if other colleagues or family members also want to use the car. Many car rental companies charge extra fees for adding an extra driver to the rental contract. At Shortleaseland you can add an extra driver to the contract for €19 extra per month.

Conclusion

Renting a car can be very convenient, but requires planning and attention to the points discussed. It is always important to read the conditions and options carefully, so that you know where you stand and you can hit the road with peace of mind. Take the time to read the contract and avoid surprises afterwards!
